All requests for an employee social security number ('DEMMAT' procedure) must be accompanied by a copy of an official document (only the following documents are acceptable: identity card, passport, civil status record stating nationality).
It is the employer's responsibility to scan the relevant document and send the image to the Social Security Centre (Centre commun de la sécurité sociale - CCSS) using the 'CARTID' procedure in the SECUline system.
CARTID file specifications
Both sides must be scanned in colour for identity cards with data on the front and the reverse (e.g. French or Belgian identity cards, etc.). To ensure the scanned data is sufficiently legible, the image should be cropped, taking care not to crop out parts of the image containing data.

The information must be sent in a single file with the following specifications:
- As a JPEG file (ISO/IEC IS 10918-1│ITU-T);
- Permitted resolution between 100 and 300 dpi;
- Maximum file size: 3 MB;
- JPEG files must not be compressed beyond 30%, and no other compression is permitted;
- 24-bit colour.
The document must be scanned in colour.
The image quality must be such that all the identity data and the photograph of the person concerned can be checked.
File name when sent using SOFiE
CARTIDyyyymmddn.xxxxxxxxxxxxx_yyyyyy.JPG
yyyy = employee's year of birth
mm = employee's month of birth
dd = employee's day of birth
n = serial number (= 0 for one occurrence; = 1 for the second occurrence, etc.
xxxx = employer registration number of the SECUline member
yyyy = SECUline number
In principle, the serial number has a value of 0. If the 'DEMMAT.dta' file contains several requests for employees born on the same day, the name of the 'CARTID' file for the 1st person takes serial number 0, the 'CARTID' file for the 2nd person born on the same day takes serial number 1, and so on.
